Beach Vacay Essentials

1. | 2. | 3./4. | 5./6. 7. | 8.

When planning and packing for a family beach vacation, the first thing that comes to mind is simple comforts.  After all, "vacation" is intended to be relaxing and stress free and you want your clothes and accessories to be fuss free as well.  Vacation is a time to let your hair down and give up some of your daily routines.  I truly love not having to fuss over what I am wearing and if that means living in a swimsuit and cover-up the majority of my vacation, I am okay with that!  I also recommend sticking with comfortable clothes that allow for easy on and off and are cooler fabrics, such as cotton.  After all, it is summer and it can be rather hot at the beach or wherever your travels may take you.  Don't forget to pack your sunscreen and some other essentials like a fabulous beach bag, a sun hat, a fun pair of sunnies and some fantastic sandals!  Calling all beach bums!!!
My family and I will be heading to Seagrove, Florida for a week and I wanted to share with you some of the great things I will be packing for myself.  I may just be living in my suits and cover-ups, but I'm also bringing along some easy dresses, as I find they are the most comfortable piece of clothing for summer.  I'll be packing both this paisley print chiffon drawstring romper and this striped mini dress from Good Night Macaroon.  Both are super comfortable and perfect for a casual day look (each can be dressed up too!).  I love a long maxi dress for Summer especially after long days spent on the beach and this season, floral print is on trend.  I adore this long floral maxi dress from H&M…it will provide both comfort and style for shopping the local boutiques or for dinner out with my Hubby.  It's so versatile!

Having a great pair of woven shorts and a cute graphic tee (H&M) goes a long way for a comfortable casual day look as well….wear your shorts over your suit or pair it with a fun graphic tee for a fun family outing or day activity such as bike riding by the beach.  Because I'm loving the floral trend, this season I have selected a floral suit (H&M) with a top that converts by removing the straps.  I love wearing a bandeau top to prevent those unwanted tan lines around your neck!  When selecting my cover-up this year, I chose a gorgeous embroidered tunic top from Good Night Macaroon.  It's simple and classic and can be easily worn over your favorite suit…not to mention, it's very light and breezy!  Lastly, don't forget about a pair of great sandals…I adore these multi-metallic flat sandals (Aldo), which will go with everything and are so easy to slip on and off!  They can be worn on the beach with your swimsuit or with any easy day outfit.  Accessories like a great sunhat, beach bag, and sunglasses are key for your days spent at the beach.  I am slightly obsessed with cute straw hats and this adorable multi-colored hat from H&M is perfect for providing the right amount of coverage while spending time on the beach or by the pool.  Of course, you have to have a great beach bag to tote all of your beach essentials in and I will be carrying this classic navy stripe bag from Stella & Dot, which provides the perfect amount of space for a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle, etc.  Speaking of sunscreen and sunglasses, I've used La Roche Posay sunscreen for years and I would absolutely recommend spending a little more for an excellent sun protectant.  It's non greasy and feels very light on your skin but doesn't fall short of providing protection from the summer sun.  I love La Roche Posay's tinted sunscreen for the body too!  Last but not least, don't forget to pack your sunnies!  A great pair of classic aviator sunglasses (Ray Ban) will shield the sun for the hours and this style looks fantastic on almost everyone!  Hope you love my beach vacation essentials and if you find yourself heading to the beach this summer, remember…disconnect, relax and ENJOY!

p.s. let your outer beauty be an accessory to your inner sparkle!

Memorial Day Outfit

Memorial Day is fast approaching and our weekend is booked up with so many different parties…cookouts and pool parties galore!  I always feel Memorial Day is the start to Summer and I know I can say that I'm super excited for fresh farmers market food and lots of pool time in the coming months.  When planning ahead for one of the parties that we will attend, I knew I wanted a great dress that was casual enough to be worn to an outdoor cookout, one I would be comfortable in, as well as a dress that represents this holiday.  What better way to represent a patriotic holiday than with stripes!
I just adore this “Dear Creatures” dress that I found at House of Stella!  I had never been into House of Stella but I am so glad I found this gem of a boutique here in Nashville, TN.  After shopping at Target, I popped into the boutique, began chatting with the Owners, Felicia and Stacy Pelerossi and immediately fell in love with, not only the store, but with these lovely ladies!  It just so happened that this dress was on sale too.  I scored it for only $30!  I was beyond happy with this great find and knew immediately that it would be perfect for Memorial Day.  Check!  I now have my dress for Memorial Day.
Accessorizing this dress was simple because the dress really doesn’t need much.  I wanted it to stand out on its own.  So, I kept my accessories minimal with a few great pieces starting with a beautiful pair of earrings from Stella & Dot.  This pair of earrings is no longer available, but there are some other beautiful styles at Stella & Dot.  I also added my gorgeous “Crystal Dot” bracelet from Mindy Maes Market, my rose gold men’s inspired watch from Michael Kors, and my fabulous shades from Gucci!  I finished the look with my nude, Apt. 9 heels from Kohls.

Now that I have my Memorial Day outfit together, it is time to get busy making the Strawberry Coconut Tartlets Jenn posted yesterday for the cookout.  Happy Memorial Day to all…hope you have a fabulous weekend and enjoy all of the parties and cookouts that you may be attending!

p.s. remember to let your outer beauty be an accessory to your inner sparkle!

Casual May Day

It's May and I'm loving the warmer weather, longer days and beautiful flowers that are blooming all around!  This is also the time of the year when you start to see much more seersucker, especially here in the South.  I’ve never owned a piece of seersucker clothing (I know, shameful considering I am a Southern girl), but I can now say I own an adorable seersucker blazer, found while shopping at Blush, in Nashville, TN.  This piece is super versatile and can be worn so many different ways.  I'm wearing it with jeans for a more casual day look, but I also see it paired with an adorable summer dress for a more dressed up look.  It was a great find and as a Southern girl, I can finally check “owning a piece of seersucker clothing” off of my list.  This blazer will be a staple in my closet from season to season!
Of course, I needed to add some color and interest to my blazer; it's adorable as is, but I like to play with prints, so that's exactly what I did.  I'm completely obsessed with all things cheetah, so when I found this Apt. 9 Crepe Top in “Cheetah Pink” at Kohl’s, I had to have it.  Not to mention, with all of the discounts Kohl’s offers, I got this fabulous top at such a great price.  I love how the print of this top provides a nice contrast to the seersucker blazer.  Love this combination!  This top is also adorable by itself and will get a lot of wear throughout the upcoming Summer months.
Wearing both the blazer and top with jeans exudes a casual, yet polished look.  I would live in comfy jeans if I could.  I'm definitely a jeans girl!  The jeans I'm wearing are super soft and comfortable…they were a find at TJMaxx and I have to say, they are some of the most comfortable jeans I own.  Of course, they were a fantastic, inexpensive find as well.  I completed this look with a Jessica Simpson floral clutch (found at TJMaxx), nude heels (Steve Madden) and last but not least, some gorgeous jewels from Stella & Dot.  All the links to these items are listed below.

Hope you enjoy this casual May Day look and don’t forget to let your outer beauty be an accessory to your inner sparkle!

In the beginning

Hey everyone!  I hope you're all having a fantastic weekend.  The weather has been absolutely gorgeous here in Greenville this weekend, so it's been tough to be anywhere but outdoors.  I've actually been doing computer work on the porch today.  It might just be the worlds best office on a beautiful day like today.
This is an especially exciting Southern Sundays because I get to introduce you all to one of my very best friends on the planet, Brooke Webb.  Brooke and I met in college at Clemson University and we were roommates our junior and senior year there.  I'm so thankful that after college, we stayed great friends.  Brooke has always been one of the best dressed and most well put together people I know.  She's an absolute pro with hair, makeup and fashion.  Several weeks ago, she started posting some of her styled outfits on Instagram and a little light bulb went off in my head.  Why not have B start contributing her fashion and beauty expertise on Carolina Girl Cooks?!  Luckily for me (and all you fabulous readers) she agreed!  We devised a plan and met halfway in Knoxville, Tennessee this past week for a photo shoot so you all can put a face with a name.  We had a blast running around town taking pictures and then of course topped off our afternoon with a stellar lunch that I'll fill you in on another time.  For an introductory post, I asked her a few questions so you all can get to know a little bit about her.  Stay tuned for more from our new resident go to for all things fashion and beauty!  Welcome B!

10 Questions with Brooke Webb of  kristen brooke~life styled beautifully
1.  Tell us a little about you.
"I'm a wife and Mother of 4 (two furry babies) living in Nashville, TN.  I'm a Southern girl, born and raised in the Carolina's, who has explored living in California, Arizona, and now Tennessee.  I find delight in many things including faith and family, date nights with my Hubby (taste testing our way around Nashville) kissing my kiddos and watching them laugh and play (and sleep peacefully too), snuggling with our pups, couples and girls nights out, laughing out loud (take me to a comedy club and I might be the loudest in there), dancing to hip hop music (one of my nicknames is actually Beyoncé), traveling (especially to a tropical destination - Cayman Islands are a fav spot), dessert (cupcakes are a BIG weakness of mine), reading a book that emotionally engrosses me into the story, reading fashion and beauty blogs, Pinterest, staying fit through Crossfit and dance, cooking (I love making meals for my family and sitting down together), a good TV show (we have too many favs to name), jewels/baubles/accessories and anything that sparkles (frankly I am obsessed with beautiful costume jewelry), going shopping (I am always on the hunt for a good bargain...if it's on sale, it's mine!), beautiful stationary, trying new makeup products, Clemson football, discovering new musicians, being a Stylist with Stella & Dot, and ALL THINGS FASHION AND BEAUTY!!!  I believe in kindness and treating others with love and respect.  I've always been told that "your outer beauty is only as beautiful as your inner beauty" so my motto is...let your outer appearance serve as an accessory to your inner sparkle!!!  And don't forget to laugh a lot along the way!"
2.  How did you get started in the fashion world?
"Being "put together" started at a very young age...I always remember my parents dressing me to a "t" and my Dad blowing out my hair into this sleek little bob.  Over the years I grew to love fashion and frankly become obsessed over my hair, too (not having a hair out of place).  Being introduced to the pageant world at age 13 also really opened my eyes to the fashion industry and I learned so much in this world that shaped my ability to style myself the right way.  Being Southern and also gaining exposure to this industry while living in California and Arizona has given me a whole new perspective on what "style" means.  My first job out of college was as a "Store Analyst" at a women's clothing corporation where I was analyzed trends and allocated merchandise according to buyer trends.  Although my professional career has taken a different direction, my personal passion for the fashion industry hasn't faltered.  I continued on to work with a friend at market in Los Angeles and have dabbled in personal styling as well.  My obsession with beautiful jewels continued and grew even more as I began my own Stylist business, as a hobby for now, with Stella & Dot.  Pinterest and the fashion/beauty blogging world have also played a role in my willingness to take more fashion risks and step outside of the box...mixing patterns has never been more fun!"
3.  Tell us a little bit about your personal style.
"My style is a mix of classic and trendy.  What I wear depends a lot on my mood and the occasion.  One day I may wear something classic, the next day bohemian, and the next trendy.  I like to find unique pieces and although I do follow trends, I typically don't follow fads. I've become much more of a risk taker and appreciate mixing patterns and colors."
4.  What’s your “Golden Rule” of style when getting dressed every day?
"Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful, always accessorize and never leave home without wearing mascara and lipgloss."
5.  What are your top five favorite beauty/fashion accessories?  Something you use/wear every day?
"Maybelline's "Great Lash" mascara in blackest black, Vaseline Rosy Lips, Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow,  my wedding band and my iPhone (oh and chewing gum...I'm always chewing it, so make that 6 things!)"
6.  What is the one item you can’t leave your house without?
"My iPhone (and my wedding band ;-))"
7.  What style do you gravitate towards, even if you don’t technically wear it?
"Bohemian chic, although my closet would never show this, and some days I want to put on hot pink lipstick, high heels and rock Gwen Stefani's style."
8.  Who is your fashion icon?
"This is tough, as I look at and pull ideas from so many icons, classic and modern.  However, when I think about it, there are three that come to mind.  Carrie Underwood and Lauren Conrad, both who are always put together, exuding a classic yet on-trend style.  Olivia Palermo, as she is more of a risk taker and her style always looks effortless."
9.  You currently live in Nashville, what are some local shops that you frequent for good fashion finds?
"Blush and Philanthropy are great for unique, beautiful finds!"
10.  If you could style anyone for a red carpet event, who would it be?
"Carrie Underwood...I admire her style and feel that our style preferences are similar."

Flowers, Egg, & Easter

So they say…”April showers bring May flowers” and all things are abloom here in Nashville!  Easter is fast approaching and like many of you, I will be spending my day with family attending church, eating a delicious brunch and hunting Easter eggs with our children.
Floral is on trend for Spring/Summer 2014 and I can’t get enough of it.  I am especially loving all the rich floral prints. I was immediately drawn to this dress by Jessica Simpson and felt it would be the perfect dress for Easter Sunday.  The combination of blue (both navy and royal), red and yellow is so classic.  I love the subtle floral print, but that it's also accented by stripes on the backside of the dress.  The pairing of floral and stripes is one of my favorite combinations right now.  The little details of this dress are gorgeous too!  The hemline in the back is slightly longer than the front and it has pleats, which adds such beautiful, visual interest to the back of the dress.
After finding my Easter Sunday dress, I was on the hunt for the perfect pair of heels and I stumbled across a gorgeous pair of royal blue heels at Kohl's.  Even better, they were on sale and are still available in stores now!  These heels really brought out the muted royal blue in the dress and compliment it nicely.  My necklace was also a purchase from Kohl’s.  My philosophy is, it never hurts to add a little bit of edge/funk to a feminine dress and I did this with my accessories.  My bracelet, earrings and rings are from Stella & Dot (earrings and bracelet are currently available, rings are from a previous collection) and you can find them here.  The adorable little yellow laser cut clutch was a surprise find at ALDO shoes, which I know this will get a lot of use this Spring/Summer.
I finished off my look with a double bun updo and a beautiful rich matte red lip (Wet n’ Wild lip color in Red Velvet).

Thanks for letting me share my Easter Sunday style with you and I wish you all a beautiful weekend ahead!

Sunshine Brightening Facial

Exfoliate, brighten, and moisturize your skin with this DIY at home Sunshine Brightening facial.  This happy little concoction is so simple to use and the recipe calls for only 3 ingredients; plain yogurt, fresh lemon juice, and sunflower oil.  Sunflower oil is easiest to find at your local Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or Fresh Market stores.  I have not been able to find it in a standard grocery store but you may have some luck.  This facial can be used as often as you would like, however, I recommend using it 2-3 times a week.
Why does the combination of these ingredients work?!  Here’s why...
Yogurt has lactic acid in it, which acts as a natural exfoliant to shed those dead skin cells, lemon/lemon juice is a natural whitener/brightener that helps treat and prevent dark/age spots, and sunflower oil is a natural moisturizer that helps keep the moisture in your skin.  These 3 ingredients combined provides you with an excellent at home facial that will do great things for your skin when used on a consistent basis.
Let’s mix and apply!

Sunshine Brightening Facial
½ cup of plain yogurt
1 tablespoon of sunflower oil
1 quarter to 1 half of a fresh squeezed lemon
Mix all 3 ingredients together until well combined.  If you find that the mixture is runny, all you need to do is add more yogurt to thicken the mixture before applying (good news is that you can store the leftover in your refrigerator and reapply throughout the week).  Once combined, use your fingers to apply all over face (you can also carry the application down your neck and onto your chest should you wish to treat those areas as well).  Let sit for 15-20 minutes.  Finally, rinse with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel.  Apply sunscreen if you use your facial in the morning.  Repeat 2-3 times per week or as often as you would like.
Your skin will feel fantastic after using this DIY facial and with consistent use, you will begin to see the benefits of the Sunshine Brightening facial.  Enjoy!
